New Login Facility 'Passkey' has Come to WhatsApp

Android WhatsApp users can say goodbye to insecure and annoying two-factor authentication. WhatsApp is rolling out a passwordless passkey feature for all Android users, the app company said on Twitter (x).

With the new security option, WhatsApp users can unlock and access their accounts using face, fingerprint and PIN security on their devices. After Google, WhatsApp is the largest user platform to mainstream the passkey feature.

What does passkey mean?

Passkey uses the device's existing authentication method instead of the traditional password. As a result, you can sign in to Gmail, PayPal or iCloud using a phone fingerprint or an authentication method like Windows Hello on a PC.

This technology is based on WebAuthn (Web Authentication) technology. Two types of keys are generated when generating a passkey: one is saved on the website or service where the account is located, and the other private key is stored on the device that will be used to verify identity. Now the question is, since the data is stored on the device, what happens if the device is lost or damaged? Since Passkey works on multiple devices, there may be backup options. Many services that support passkeys will reauthenticate using a phone number or email or some hardware security (if available).

Apple's and Google's password vaults already support Passkey, and password managers like 1Password and Dashlane already have this feature. 1Password has launched an online directory listing service that will help users login using passkeys.

Passkey has been testing in WhatsApp's beta channel for quite some time now, the feature has finally been rolled out to Android users. Meta has not said anything about when the WhatsApp Passkey feature will arrive for iPhone. This new feature will come to Android in the next week or month.

By adding passkey feature to WhatsApp, a new chapter of freedom from remembering passwords, or password compromise through data breach or phishing is going to start. But that doesn't mean that the 2 billion WhatsApp users scattered around the world are completely safe from all digital risks, but thanks to this new feature, the days of getting into trouble in the process of password selection are about to end. Thanks to the passkey feature, the account security of people using a simple password like "12345" will be increased to some extent.

How do you see the passkey feature? Passkey or password - which do you think is more secure? Let us know in the comment section.
